New luxury Riad Spice opens in Marrakech, Morocco

This autumn sees the opening of a new luxury riad in the heart of the revitalised old town Medina by UK market leaders, Marrakech Riad.

Mike and Lucie Wood, owners of the boutique Marrakech Riad properties have opened their fifth riad: Located close to the Marrakech Museum and Ben Youssef Madrasa, Riad Spice is their most luxurious “home from home hotel” yet, consisting of 10 bedrooms, a dipping pool, roof terrace and elegant, well-proportioned spaces to relax. The crowning glory is a luxury Bedouin style bedroom on the roof, ‘Paradise’ complete with a private terrace and raised, tented area overlooking the city, designed to create the feeling of floating over the Medina on a magic carpet.

As with the other Marrakech Riad hotels, the sixteenth century property has been refurbished to retain its original features and embrace its heritage, whilst enjoying contemporary touches and a welcoming, homely feel. Signature touches including bright, white décor, intricate, traditional plasterwork and round-the-clock services of the attentive local staff are par for the course. While larger, grander rooms and luxurious styling reflect the affluence of the previous inhabitants; 17 generations of the same family – traders, farmers and community leaders – resided here until 2008.

There is also be a big emphasis on social responsibility, with a bank of photovoltaic solar panels and an air source heat pump to heat the 5 metre by 2 metre dipping pool.

Rooms cost from £128 per night including a delicious breakfast served on request. Guests can also enjoy the facilities at nearby sister property, Riad Star, including a hammam and spa and cookery school.

“We opened our first riad well over a decade ago and have seen an increased demand for luxury accommodation from our guests,” says Mike. “The rooms and suites at Riad Spice are bigger than our other properties and it’s superbly well-located to take advantage of the city’s newest museums and restaurants. The deep roots we have in this area coupled with all the touches that have proved successful at our other properties will go towards making this our most exceptional riad yet.”

Other openings and developments in Marrakech in 2019 include:

M Avenue, a new 500-metre long “Garden Avenue” located in the heart of Marrakech, is scheduled to open in late 2019. With a vision to become an international lifestyle destination for design, fashion, food, recreation and culture, the Avenue will connect the Palais des Congrès on Boulevard Mohamed VI with the Ménara Gardens.

Meanwhile the old town Medina, a World Heritage site is undergoing a transformation, with the whole street scene being revitalised with funds from UNESCO. This redevelopment includes repairing ancient, crumbling walls, constructing new shop fronts as well as refurbishing the Ben Youssef Madrasa and Koubba Baroudiyine, the oldest building in Marrakech.

This in addition to new flights with Ryanair from Manchester to Marrakech (from Summer 2019).
