24 Apr Global accolade for Cornish craft vodka
A Cornish vodka has been recognised as one of the best on the planet, stealing silver at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2019.
Produced by Colwith Farm Distillery at Lanlivery near Fowey, Aval Dor (Cornish for “potato”) beat off global competition to take Silver at the Oscars of the spirits industry. The 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition – which took place at the Hotel Nikko, San Francisco from 22-24 March – saw a record-breaking year with almost 3,000 entries from all corners of the world.
“For a new, craft distillery to win an award at such a prestigious event is a massive deal for us. We were up against the most established producers in the world after all. Producing a vodka from scratch is the ultimate challenge in distilling, so we’re delighted with this award” says Colwith Farm Distillery owner, Steve Dustow.
The first ‘plough to bottle’ facility in Cornwall, Colwith Farm Distillery opened for tours and tastings in July 2018. Steve Dustow has been producing Aval Dor since 2014, using potatoes grown on the fifth-generation family farm. Now being produced and bottled all on one site, the vodka spirit is distilled forty-times in state-of-the-art stills, then blended with mineral water from an aquifer deep beneath the farm to create a smooth and creamy vodka.
Colwith Farm Distillery Tours and Gin Masterclasses are available weekly.
